In the 19 th century, the only surviving herd was in a preserve of the Chinese Emperor. Natural disasters and the Boxer Revolution wiped out the entire Chinese population. By 1930s, only 18 animals remained in Zoos in Europe. With captive breeding, there are now about 2500 animals in the 3 Chinese national reserves.
